Life Lessons: 7 Things I Learned as a Black Entrepreneur from Jingle Jangle the Movie
So over the holiday break I watched the Netflix film Jingle Jangle with my family. It’s a cute family film that celebrates a lot of different aspects of Black culture wrapped up as a great addition to the holiday movie list. As I thought more and more about this movie, I realized that it’s such a great example of the ups and downs of black entrepreneurship and a great opportunity to teach the family about various aspects of that path. As a budding entrepreneur myself, these are seven lessons I took away from this movie:
1. Family businesses are great support systems but can complicate overall family dynamics.
2. Everybody who is/wants to work with you isn’t actually rooting you (and can be plotting on your downfall)
3. Trademark/Copyright is SUPER important and we as a people have a history of getting our ideas stolen
4. Even if other people are doing similar things, no one has that special thing - you and your brand.
5. Giving back to the community has always been an aspect of black entrepreneurship and is an important one!
6. If your work isn’t genuine and honest, then it will eventually catch up to you
7. You are never too young to start your own thing! And don’t let anyone, not even those closest to you, tell you otherwise!
While the movie wasn’t exactly my typical style, I loved the fact that these lessons were there for me to reflect on. It also showed me that if I believe in my product, I should be proud and show it to the world!
